Iceland- Day 8 - In Which Our Hero Takes It Easy
Day 8 - October 4
Well, I've been here a full week. Time has certainly flown by. Part of that may be because of how exhausted I was on many occasions. Regardless, I've started the second half of my trip. It's odd to think that I survived my first week. I want to look back on it, before talking about this day.
My first week began with exhaustion and anxiety. There were breakdowns and even contemplations of leaving early. There was an epiphany where I knew I could make it. I walked through wind and sleet. I walked between continents. I hiked to am ice cave and drank water from a glacier. I walked five miles around downtown Reykjavik. I met up with a friend and his family, and the best Pizza Hut that I've ever had. I hiked up a mountain and almost got blown down to my death. I stood on rock that could have easily cracked open and led to me burning burnt alive by lava (didn't think that one through.) Quite the week! What lies ahead may be more interesting. Who knows?
I took it slow, today, though. I needed rest. I got up and went to get groceries. Since the grocery store didn't open for another 40 minutes, I stopped by a book store/coffee shop for some breakfast. I had a Belgian waffle and a Swiss mocha. In Iceland, they put jam and whipped cream on waffle. I don't know what kind of jam it was but it was interesting. Not my favorite, but still interesting. The Swiss mocha was delightful, though. This is the third one I've had, here. What makes it better than the mochas in the US is that it's not as sweet. The cocoa is unsweetened and there doesn't really seem to be any additional sugar. I've found that Iceland's lower sugar content in some things makes it better than the US. I think we have the corn lobbiests to thank for the excess of sugar in the US, but I digress.
I went grocery shopping and then went back to the guesthouse. I had two cups of tea, and went back to my room. I know. It's not a really adventurous day. Better than day 4, mind you.
I watched a movie on my kindle, and spent some time at the Sun Voyager. I love that sculpture so much! I went back to the guesthouse, had one of those awful Icelandic showers, and called it a night.
Don't worry. Tomorrow will be quite different.
