Iceland - Day 4 - In Which Our Hero Sleeps...a LOT

Day 4 - September 30 I woke up exhausted. I stayed awake for short periods of time but kept falling back asleep. I had planned to check out a portion of the downtown area, today. The weather is nice enough for a good, long walk. I just didn't have the energy. Maybe on another one of my free days. I could have taken a five hour energy drink, but just didn't want to. In the past 23 hours (since I went to sleep last night) I haven't even left the building.  I just hope that I can sleep enough, tonight. I have to be outside in 12 and a half hours. Only time will tell. - Lance J. M.

Iceland Trip Day 3 - In Which Our Hero Stands Between Continents

Day 3 - September 29 I woke up in a depression and didn't feel like getting ready for today's adventure, but managed to force myself off my bed. I waited for the bus but dropped my bus ticket when I was getting on. Thankfully, some guy caught it and handed it to me.  He saved me over $3, by doing that. I, soon, managed to get a clearer head. My was especially clear when I got on the tour bus and found a seat with enough legroom. And so my first journey began. I walked through the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. I legit walked between two continents! After that, we drove through to see fields and lakes. We stopped at a waterfall and it started snowing and sleeting....in September! Eventually, we made an extra stop that was a pure delight. It was a farm. There was a sheepdog who was insanely friendly and made sure to greet all of the guests. There were two horses who were also friendly and loved attention. From there, we made our way to Geysir to see some hot spri...

Iceland -Day 2 - In Which Our Hero Has an Epiphany

Day 2 - September 28 I kept waking up throughout the night, which is perfectly normal for me. I decided to just go ahead and get up 2 hours earlier than I intended. I still got about 10 hours of sleep, so I figured I should get a shower while I was up early. The blogs that mention the sulfuric smell of Icelandic hot water weren't lying. It's not extreme, but it's still there. Luckily, I like the smell of sulfur. Yesterday, I figured that I'd wake up with a clearer head and that I'd have a different perspective on this trip. I was wrong. I still woke up with some major anxiety. The amazing Sophia (a friend of mine) kept pushing and pushing to break through my thick skull and make me think logically. Given the fact that she's from England and has lived in France and Japan, she knows what she's talking about when it comes to being a fish out of water. I took a cab to the domestic airport. They didn't open for a good 10 minutes. So, me and this Polish ma...

Iceland- Day 1 - In Which Our Hero Arrives at His Destination

Image
Day 1 - September 27  I arrived in Iceland after the longest flight of my life (on which I saw the Northern lights over Canada and I flew over Greenland). The wind was heavier than anything I had thus far experienced. The high desert has nothing on Keflavik. I boarded a bus and saw the most amazing sunrise I've ever seen. Along the way from the airport to the guesthouse, I saw lava fields covered in moss. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The ocean's waves were constantly white capped and the mountains in the distance were covered in the whitest snow.  The day's fun ended there. I got the guesthouse and had to wait a few hours before I could get an early check in. Having been awake for almost 21 hours and having only ate eggs, nuts, protein bars, and an airline snack mix packet, I was exhausted and ready to sleep anywhere I could. Thankfully, I ended up on a bed that is more comfortable than any mattress I've ever owned.  I napped, and then walked to th...
